Why We ALL Need a Hobby
No, really! I mean it! Actual studies show that having hobbies can improve our mental health and self-esteem and let’s be honest, I could use a big extra dose of both this year. Maybe you feel the same? That’s why I recently took up pottery! After more than seven years of following my interest in wine, I wanted to be a beginner again. I wanted to try my hand (literally) at something new. Something that let me get a little weird, a little messy, and totally out of my head! Just like wine, my love for pottery was hard to explain at first. But when I take a step back, it’s obvious: I needed a creative outlet after a day of meetings and managing programs. I wanted something physical, or at least more physical than typing on a keyboard and clicking a mouse. Pottery delivered. What I’ve realized is that pottery and wine aren’t all that different! Both require me to slow down and both ask me to tune into my senses—smell and taste for wine, touch for clay. And truly, both give me a sense of creative expression I didn’t even know I was missing. In addition to pottery and wine, I’ve also found joy in cooking, yoga, and travel! They each tap into something slightly different: mindfulness, exploration, movement, creativity. In a world that’s constantly demanding our attention, hobbies like these help me feel more grounded, more me. Last week, I wrapped up my first 8-week beginner pottery course, and I have to say, it felt SO good to commit to something just because I wanted to. No pressure to be perfect. Just the freedom to be a curious, clumsy beginner. And while I’ll always recommend wine tasting or pottery as incredible hobbies, the truth is, you can pick anything. The only rule? Choose something that makes you feel great! ...But if wine has been on your radar (even a little), I’d love to help you get started! 🍷 Join my virtual wine club, The Cork Crew, where we taste, talk, and nerd out about wine together. It’s fun, it’s casual, and yes, it’s totally science. Whether you’re a wine newbie or seasoned sipper, we welcome all kinds of curious drinkers. You bring the glass, we bring the good vibes. So, what hobby have you been thinking about trying lately? Drop a comment, I’d love to hear!
