I Bet You've Never Tried These Red Wines!

Let Me Introduce You to
Mondeuse and Trousseau

Picture
I bet you’ve never tried these red wines before!

Let me introduce you to Mondeuse (“mon-doz” or “mon-doose”) and Trousseau (“true-so”)!

These red wines come from a region in Europe known as the Alpine wine region and they were the focus of my latest Cork Crew Virtual Tasting.

Mondeuse originates from the Savoie region of France and that’s where you’ll find most of it still today. There is some in neighboring regions in the Alps and as I learned from one of our Cork Crew members, some in Oregon too!

This grape produces a wine that is often referred to as Pinot Noir meets Syrah. It’s lighter bodied but with a dark intense purple color and fairly high tannins. Those tannins make the wine age-worthy but it also means you shouldn’t drink a Mondeuse too young. You can expect aromas of white pepper, violets, black cherry, and a gamey meaty note. It’s a unique wine definitely worth trying. I imagine it pairing really well with charcuterie, especially salami.

Trousseau originates from the Jura region of France, but surprisingly enough that’s not where you’d find the most plantings. Turns out there are more vineyards of this grape in Portugal where it goes by the name Bastardo! That said, I still think a Jura Trousseau is worth looking for!

This grape produces a wine that’s light to medium bodied with really bold fruit flavors and a bit of acidity. You’ll find aromas of strawberry, plum, nutmeg, and white pepper. I enjoyed it with the mushroom stroganoff as seen in the first picture.

Have you heard of these grapes before? Which one do you want to try first?
