Is a wine fridge really worth it? What makes a wine fridge different from a regular kitchen refrigerator?

As I’m sure you can guess by the title, the answer to those questions are a resounding yes and multiple things. Let me explain.
The three key things that make a wine fridge different from a kitchen refrigerator are temperature, humidity, and light.
Temperature
Your kitchen refrigerator is far too cold for storing your wine longer than a week. You should be storing your wine between 45°F and 65°F. The average temperature of your kitchen fridge? Below 40°F. This cold will stunt development in your wine.

But also, with wine that cold, it’s not a good drinking temp. With a wine fridge, you can control the temp and some even let you choose two different temps for whites and reds, though this feature isn’t necessary.

Humidity
Have you ever noticed how dried out your vegetables get when left in the fridge too long? That's exactly what will happen to the cork. This happens because unlike a wine fridge, a regular refrigerator removes humidity as it cools.

If the cork gets too dry, it shrinks and lets oxygen into the bottle which destroys the wine. And not only would it let oxygen in, but also other neighboring odors in the refrigerator like your leftover Pad Thai or roasted vegetables from the night before.

Light

When storing your wine, you want to find a cool, dark place. Your kitchen fridge might be cool (too cool as we learned earlier), but it’s not always dark. Every time you open the door, a bright fluorescent light causes damage to the wine inside the bottle.

A wine fridge on the other hand uses LED lights which do not emit UV light, and the amount of heat they emit is minimal making it safe for storing your wine long term.

Which Wine Fridge to Buy
One of my favorite wine fridges is the NewAir Shadow Series Wine Cooler (Model NWC016BK00) and they’ve been nice enough to provide a code that I can share with you for a special discount!

Here’s why I think the NewAir Shadow Series Wine Cooler is the best wine fridge:

  1. The size of the fridge is nice and compact and the cooling compressor is incredibly quiet which means the wine fridge can fit just about anywhere in my house. I ended up placing mine in my office so I would be ready for happy hour at any moment.
  2. The door of this wine fridge is double paned and air tight, providing outstanding insulation to keep all that cold air inside. As a frameless, mirrored door this wine fridge provides as much beauty as it does functionality.
  3. The shelves are removable! This allows me to configure the wine fridge to exactly the interior layout that I need.

Ready to get serious about storing your wine? Use my link to get a special discount off your very own NewAir Shadow Series Wine Cooler! This wine fridge is definitely worth it!
